Cost Of Living In HK

Hong Kong can be quite affordable, but if you are a high roller you can drop big dollars as quickly as you like

All prices below are in HK$ (US$1~HK$7.80)

Foodstuffs:

  • can of Coke $4-5
  • bottle of water $5
  • Mars bar $6
  • half-loaf of bread $9
  • milk (1 litre) $20
  • Big Mac Value Meal $17.90
  • thickshake at McDonalds $9
  • baked potato at Oliver's $24
  • Dominos pizza $80-100

Other stuff:

  • local phonecall free ($1 from payphone)
  • international postage stamp $3.00
  • South China Morning Post (newspaper) $7
  • movie ticket $60
  • CDs (top 40) $130
  • DVDs $100-250 (although some movies can be found for $20)

Clothes:

  • t-shirt $30
  • cheap jeans $90
  • casual trousers $140
  • tailor-made vest $330
  • Nike sneakers $500-900
  • 3 tailor-made business shirts $1,000
  • tailor-made shoes $500-1000
  • tailor-made suit $1,500-2,500

You should keep in mind that eating in Hong Kong can be a costly exercise. Although you can get a decent snack (or a classic polystyrene "lunchbox")  for $25, a nice lunch in a reasonably-priced cafe can easily cost $75. Dinner (no wine) can range from $60-120. But if you want to eat somewhere really nice you can easily expect to pay $200-400 per person. And don't forget, most places will hit you for an additional 10-15% service charge. If you can’t ask a local for advice, don’t eat in a flashy restaurant (unless you want a flashy bill). Most places will have the menu out front for your perusal.
